everything i need is right here in my hands

The other day I headed downtown vancouver to do a lil' bit of winter clothes shopping. I headed into winners (I don't think you american friends have winners do you...its good, but target's better) and got a few armfuls of clothes picked out to try on. I left the changeroom empty handed. Everything I tried on I realized I had something at home that was a perfectly good version of it. So I left empty handed, happily.
On the bus ride home I thought of a few friends who have decided to not by anything in the next year but art supplies. Then today I read this inspiring post by Rachelle about going the next year without buying any clothes. They've got me thinking. They've got me looking in my closet full of vibrant clothes and realizing everything I need is in there, actually far more, almost anything I could want is in there.
So yes, I'm pondering this. It would be so good in so many ways. Saving money, being more present in my financial life, actually wearing what I have, maybe even altering that big pile of clothing waiting to be fixed! Of course, to be fully honest, I'd surely get one more anthropologie visit in before this began (its the truth) and would get myself another of this hat that I never seem to be without these days, but other than that (none of which are necessities) I think I'd be good to go.
Clothing exchanges would need to be a part of this plan too. Why not shop in each other's closets. I'm a big fan of clothing exchanges...particularly with people who wear clothing sizes near mine (I've been to far too many at which I come home with just hat as nothing else remotely fit) as I feel like I have more than enough clothing to get me by for a year and would like things that I don't need to go to the hands of someone who does.
So, am I in? I think so. At least for the no clothing part. Due to that whole unfortunate theivery incident, I do forsee some purchasing of a new computer, but this frugal-fest would do nothing but help me in that.
(Ouch...there's a shopping gremlin in my head kicking and screaming right now)
Its got me thinking about all sorts of aspects of the potential of being more frugal
-what are other ways i can cut down on my cost of living?
-what are my non-negotiables...things that may not be necessities but that help me feel my most alive?
-what really are my necessities?
-what in my life (and my closet) is just taking up space?
oh gad...what did i just commit to?!?
alas...i think it'll do this girl some good!
and i think this song will need to be my mantra for the year......

Since last year (when my financial slump began) I had to double check my spending habits at the door. It's been a humbling experience going from side of the money spectrum to the other - but it's taught me so much.
Personally, I couldn't give up clothing purchases and this is only because I buy a piece or two at at time every couple of months. But I hear you on this and I am all for finding areas to cut back.
I love your pic!! xo
Well, I do like that the spending freeze is an inspiration, but dude, like you I wonder what the HELL I got myself into, heehee. I do have everything I need and really, I'll wear and appreciate it all so much more this year. And anything I think I need, I'll make with what I've already got. xo
Yikes! You go girl! I fully support your idea 100% but just have to ask...
Does there happen to be an Anthro in Portland where a couple of creatively inspired dressers can have one last fling next week ?!?!
I cannot resist buying thrift shop sweaters though...i must say ~ especially if it half price sweater day which means
i get them for 2.49
hard to resist:)
you have great style miss vivacious vivienne and i am sure you can wear your clothes upside down and

Yes you said true that clothing exchanges would need to be a part of this plan too. Why not shop in each other's closets.
