someday...

the view from the ferry

being on gabriola island this past weekend, in a little cabin of my own with just a cot and a bug net. well, it sparked something in me.  it happens when i go to the country...it just feels like home. i fell asleep listening to the water hit the shore and smelling the cedar of the cabin.

the next morning i woke up, opened my door and there was a deer looking at me.  no picture of that moment.  it felt like one that i just needed to live.

i'm a country girl trying to live in the city, swooned by the art, culture and diversity of the city but living in a bit of a constant state of overwhelm.

then when i go to the country its as though my heart just pumps "home, home, home" and my mind kindly says "you forgot, didn't you".

for now the city is where i am, its where i make my living and have a sweet little place to live.  it is my now. but the idea of living in a sweet cabin in the country has now taken residence in my thoughts, once again.

someday...

Strange--this cabin theme has been coming up a lot recently. I've been thinking a lot about space and location and the concept of home. And the idea of something simple, something close to nature and integrated with natural rhythms has been constantly reiterating itself in my own experiences and in the reflective writing of others that I have been stumbling upon. The city definitely has its perks but it's missing something. I think that thing has to do with community and spirituality, but I'm not quite sure.

I'm glad you had a great time on Gabriola!

Great musing on country vs city... the both have their perks and bring different things to the table. It sounds like you are making the most of the moments, wherever you are!

Oh I SO get this. Boy oh boy. Mark and I keep talking about how we need to live in the city once - and I think it is because we both know that that is not where we'll end up. Give me pine trees, the Canadian Shield, and a lake and my whole being sighs with gratitude. It's funny how easy it is to find home if we pay attention!!

Someday I'd love to come and sip tea in that cabin!

I know exactly what you mean. I have the same feelings every time I go anywhere closer to nature than the city. There is a different kind of time that exists in nature, a time that is guided by the sun or moon rather than stopwatches and deadlines. A time that says "Life is in the living, not the existing" and makes you notice everything with a new clarity. Watching the way animals adapt to things around them makes me realize that sometime, by thinking too much, we create our own problems.

how wonderful your weekend sounds.... the images you posted and what i see from your words are beautiful.
we spend the weekend at the ocean and i felt so at home there, if only i could build a little shack on the shore and live there for awhile.... sigh.

This post is one after my own heart....I have been debating on buying a cabin in the NC mountains forever, but everything seems so extravegant!! Can't I get something one room with an outhouse anymore!? LOL....unfortunately I am living in a city that doesn't inspire me as well as NOT living in the country...but, I am grateful for the job so I try to not complain!

I am SO with you. I have no vacations planned this year and I live in downtown Chicago and am craving nature really, really bad. I want trees and shade and no sirens and no buses and no trains, just peace and beauty and the smell of nature.

Oh, I get this. I love the city and love living near it, but I also know that if I had my little grey cottage on the beach, I wouldn't need anything else. Though, I do like the idea of having time in both places. :)
